What is Operations as Code?

Operations as Code™ is your business, written down so your AI can run it. What it runs on today, where the work lives and where it is heading go into plain files in one shared folder, kept in git. Your AI reads them before it answers, so it works from your business, not a guess. OpsCode teaches it, and the standard is free.

// How it works

Six steps,in a fixed order.

Steps 0 to 2 are questions. Step 3 is hands-on. Steps 4 and 5 connect it up. Nothing is moved, so nothing that works today breaks.

  1. Start from your Self as Code.

    What you wrote down about yourself is already there, so it never asks again.

  2. Software.

    What runs the business. List it. Don't install or connect anything yet.

  3. Team.

    Who does what. Then the roles you'll need next.

  4. Chaos.

    Every place your files live: downloads, the desktop, a Drive, someone else's laptop. Then copy them into the business folder. Copy, never move, so nothing that works today breaks.

  5. Connect.

    Email, calendar and files, so your AI can read them.

  6. GitHub.

    The one shared copy, with every change dated. Everyone else joins from their own laptop.

// What you get

One shared folder.For each business.

Your AI can read it, and your team can check it. Not sure where something goes? If two people can disagree about it, it goes in context-core. If you can go and look, it goes in systems.

The number that matters is how many jobs are still done by hand. The register in systems/ counts it, and the whole point is to bring it down.

your-business/
  • CLAUDE.mdThe front page. Your AI reads it first, every session.
  • systems/What runs today: your software, where the work lives, and every job you do the same way each time.
  • context-core/Where the business is heading: its goals, customers, offers and voice.
  • decisions/Choices already made, with the why.
  • inbox/Files copied off your laptop. Copies, never originals.

// Where it fits

You first.Then the business.

Operations as Code is about one business. Self as Code is about you, and comes first. Run two businesses and you do Operations as Code twice.

Business owners building at their laptops around one table, one with a hand up
Auckland, 25 September

// Real examples

In a room, and in our own business.

On 25 September 2026, nine business owners wrote their businesses down at the AWS office in Auckland: where each one is going, what good looks like and where the gaps are.

OpsCode runs on it too. On 8 August 2026 a script read our own files and pulled everyone in them into one list for our CRM: 423 people, 20 companies and 435 email addresses, with no typing.

// Fair questions

Operations as Code questions, answered.

Is this the same as operations as code in IT?

No. In IT, operations as code means writing the jobs that run servers and networks as code. OpsCode uses the words for the whole business, from how you sell to where you are going, written in plain words. You don't write any code.

Do I need to be technical?

No. Most of the people we teach have never written code and never will. The files are plain words, and your AI does the heavy lifting.

Which AI tools does it work with?

We teach it with Claude Code, which reads the folder before it answers. The files are plain text in git, so they also open in any text editor. Delete every tool and you still have your business, written down.

Is Operations as Code free?

Yes. The OaC File Format, the open standard the folder follows, is free under CC BY 4.0, and the starter folder is public on GitHub. You pay for your own AI subscription. A workshop teaches it with a coach.

Where can I learn Operations as Code?

At an OpsCode workshop. It is day two of the two-day workshop and the afternoon of the one-day workshop. Rooms are on sale in Melbourne and Christchurch. Every price is on the prices page.

// Do it with us

Write your business down, in a room.

Operations as Code is the second part of every OpsCode workshop, straight after Self as Code. You leave with the folder built and your AI reading it.
